While they look very different, Pepper & Sage are actually biological sisters! They have the same parents, but were born four months apart in two different litters. Their mom definitely needed a break after that!
Their parents, Forest (dad) and Kittery (mom), belong to my mom’s side of my family. Forest is a pure bred Maine Coon cat and Kittery is a Maine Coon/Bengal mix. The first pregnancy was much anticipated and planned by my family…the second, not so much. We are so thankful though because it brought us Sage! Shortly after my mom and stepdad had Forest fixed.
Dan and I adopted Pepper when we were engaged and she came to live with me in Montreal even before Dan did! She was born June 10th, 2021. She was such a spunky kitten who loved to sleep by my face at night after playing fetch (yes, fetch) and chasing toys around the apartment for an hour. After we got married and Dan moved in, nearly every night we would have her tearing down our long hallway back and forth for about an hour before bed.
We had absolutely no intention of adopting a second cat. Honestly, Dan had to convince me of even adopting Pepper. I knew we hoped to travel and thought having a cat would make that more difficult. I guess he was right that we could make it working seeing as how we’ve managed to do tons of travelling and travel nursing with TWO cats!
Sage was born two days after our wedding on October 11th, 2021. This time I was the one who had to convince him. It took a while, but she was such a cute kitten and “how big of a difference could one more really make?” At least that was my argument. Turns out both Pepper & Sage had some health struggles that would last about a year and lead to maaaany vet visits. It also turned out to be a decision we never regretted 🙂
Sage’s spunkiness rivals that of Pepper’s and, after initially not liking each other, they have developed the sweetest bond. They are fun, loving, so playful, and I couldn’t imagine not having them. Especially with Dan working nights for his first two travel nursing contracts, I have been so glad to have their presence in our home. They add so much fun and energy to our life, and we are way way too attached. Check out their Instagram (yep, we did that) to see some fun Pepper & Sage content.
