We love Trader Joe’s and have many staples that we like to keep on hand for special occasions, or for when we need a quick and easy meal from the freezer! Below are some of our Trader Joe’s favourites, what we’re looking forward to trying next, and things we’d recommend you pass on. I’ll link what I can, but so many items are seasonal and/or just not listed on their website, but I’ll also add pictures where I can so you can know what to look for next time you’re shopping!
Mandarin Orange Chicken – This is one of our all time favourites! It’s $4.99 and can easily feed a family of four (when accompanied by sides like vegetable fried rice & naan). Dan loves how citrusy/tart it is while still being sweet and savoury.
Garlic Naan – Another all time favourite that we love to pair with the mandarin orange chicken!
Chocolate Peppermint Cremes – I’m obsessed with these. They’re like York peppermint patties but sooo much better.
Vanilla Bean Paste – Like vanilla extract, but sweet with tons of little vanilla bean seeds. I love adding it to baked goods for a little bit of that vanilla bean look and crunch, as well as hot drinks!
Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings – There’s this dumpling place in Montreal that I miss so much, and while these aren’t nearly as good they are still quite tasty, and who doesn’t love a good soup dumpling?
Chocolate Croissants – These are delicious. My mom used to make these every once in a while and now I try to always have a pack in the freezer ready to go for when we have guests stay over.
Garlic Salt Grinder – I love having this on hand to use atop rolls or garlic bread. There are some added dried herbs as well which makes this a super delicious garlic salt!
Turkey Sausage Stuffing Fried Rice – It sounds a little odd, and I was a bit skeptical, but Dan picked it out and it turned out to be delicious!
Hashbrowns – Classic, they’re just tasty.
Chocolate Coconut Almonds – I wasn’t sure I loved these at first, but they soon became a favourite that I would snack on throughout the day as a little treat.
Almond Kringle – All in all this was delicious and would be a great thing to serve at a party. However, for us being a family of two it was a LOT and it’s suuuper sweet so we felt like we could only eat a little bit at a time.
Espiral Vinho Verde – A $5 bottle of wine (literally, it’s $4.99) that’s great for the price! It’s slightly sparkling which makes it a fun, light, summery white wine. All in all it’s a bit sweet for us, but it’s a good wine and you can’t beat that price.
It seems every time I go to Trader Joe’s I come back with twice the amount of groceries as originally planned. I follow a page on Instagram who reviews items from TJ’s everyday and gives me lots of ideas of what to try next – check her account out here! We have lots of things that we’d love to try next, but here are some of the things we’re looking forward to trying:
Chocolate Lava Cakes – These look delicious and have gotten good reviews.
Crushed Ginger – Frozen ginger cubes ready to add to recipes if you forgot to get ginger! I think this would be super helpful, and from what I’ve heard they’re actually super good & flavorful despite being frozen.
Crushed Garlic – Same thoughts as above, but garlic!
Fondue – We love fondue, and heard that this one is great!
For those of you who don’t know, Dan has a very hard time wasting food and 90% of the time will suffer through awful food and drink for the sake of finishing it. With that said, he wanted me to warn you to maybe not purchase these items after he faithfully finished all of it despite hating it:
Shrimp Burgers – These seem to be hit or miss for people. They were definitely a miss for Dan. He loves shrimp and burgers so he was optimistic, but ended up really not liking these.
Malabari Paratha – I think part of why we didn’t like this was because we just had it as a side. Maybe it would be better with sauce or as a wrap or something, but we found it to be super dry and not very flavorful.
